Breakthrough: Domestically developed amorphous metal-ceramic and nanodiamond coatings have achieved engineering-scale applications.
(October 17, 2025) Recently, China has achieved a series of remarkable breakthroughs in the field of advanced wear-resistant coating materials. From petroleum refining to metallurgical rolling, two representative domestically developed ultra-wear-resistant new materials—the “amorphous metal-ceramic high-temperature wear-resistant lining” and the “low-friction ultra-wear-resistant nanodiamond coating”—have successively been demonstrated in engineering applications, addressing several critical "bottleneck" challenges and equipping industrial equipment with a "Made in China" super protective armor.
Weihai Tianrun JinYu: The lifespan of high-temperature wear-resistant liners has been increased by 15 times.
Tianrun Jinyu New Materials Co., Ltd., incubated by the Weihai Tianrun Advanced Materials Research Institute, has recently achieved a revolutionary breakthrough in the metallurgical industry. Its newly developed amorphous metal-ceramic high-temperature wear-resistant lining plates have been successfully deployed on more than 40 hot rolling production lines across China.
This product is designed for extremely harsh operating conditions in hot-rolling production lines, where temperatures range from 600°C to 1,200°C, and it employs a unique preparation technology for amorphous metallic-ceramic coatings. Application results show that its service life can exceed 10 days—representing an improvement of 15 to 20 times compared to conventional lining plates. This not only significantly reduces replacement frequency and boosts production efficiency but also effectively minimizes surface defects on the steel strip. To date, the product has generated indirect benefits exceeding 1 billion yuan for more than 30 steel mills, including Baosteel and Shandong Iron and Steel.
China National Petroleum Engineering Materials Institute: Successful Application of Nanodiamond Coatings
Meanwhile, the low-friction, ultra-wear-resistant nanodiamond coating material developed by the China National Petroleum Engineering Materials Research Institute has also achieved significant progress. This material has been operating stably for over nine months at the 400,000-ton-per-year full-density polyethylene plant of Lanzhou Petrochemical’s Yulin Branch.
This nano-diamond coating successfully addresses the longstanding challenges of premature wear and short service life faced by sliding-end bearings in imported vibrating screens under multi-media operating conditions, increasing the equipment’s service life by more than three times. This represents a major breakthrough for China in the field of hard coatings, filling a domestic technological gap and providing new technical support for the long-term, safe operation of refining and petrochemical facilities.
